Book Before Thanksgiving: Get Your Carpets Clean and Dry Before Holiday Guests Arrive

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26 this year, and for a lot of homes around Vancouver and Clark County, the countdown is already on. The turkey gets ordered, the guest room gets cleared out, and someone looks down at the living room carpet and says, “We really need to get that cleaned before everyone comes.”

The trick is timing. Clean carpet only helps if it’s also dry, settled, and back under the furniture before the doorbell starts ringing. Here in the Pacific Northwest, late fall weather can make that take longer than you’d expect. That’s why booking early is one of the easiest ways to take stress off your holiday.

Why Fall Weather Changes the Timeline

In the summer, freshly cleaned carpet dries quickly with the windows open and warm air moving through the house. November in Vancouver is a different story. Cool temperatures, damp air, and gray, rainy days all slow down drying.

After a hot water extraction cleaning, carpet is often dry to the touch within several hours, but it can take longer in cold, damp weather, especially in rooms with little airflow or thick, plush carpet. You don’t want guests walking on damp carpet in wet shoes or setting heavy furniture on it too soon. Giving yourself a few days of cushion before company arrives takes the guesswork out of it.

Why Early November Is the Sweet Spot

Many homeowners have the same idea at the same time, so the weeks right before Thanksgiving tend to book up quickly, and the days just before the holiday go first. If you wait until the week of Thanksgiving to call, you may find the day you wanted is already taken.

Booking in early to mid-November gives you:

  • More choice of days and times, including the slot that fits around your work schedule.
  • Time for carpet to dry completely, even if the weather stays cold and wet.
  • Room to put furniture back and get the house set up without rushing.
  • A buffer for surprises, like a spill or a pet accident in the days after cleaning.

A good rule of thumb: aim to have your carpets cleaned one to two weeks before your first guests arrive.

A Simple Pre-Thanksgiving Countdown

Now through early November: Walk through the rooms guests will use: the entry, living room, dining room, hallways, and guest room. Note traffic lanes, spots, pet areas, and any rippled or loose carpet. Then call to get on the schedule.

The week before your cleaning: Vacuum well, pick up small items from the floor, and think about which furniture you’d like moved. If you’re also planning to have a couch, an area rug, or tile and grout done, mention it when you book so it can all be handled in one visit.

Cleaning day: Turn up the heat a little and keep air moving with ceiling fans or a box fan. If it’s not pouring rain, cracking a window can help too. Keep pets and kids off the carpet until it’s dry.

The days after: Let the carpet finish drying before putting heavy furniture back. Put sturdy mats at every door to catch rain, mud, and wet leaves.

Thanksgiving week: Enjoy the clean floors. If something spills, don’t put any liquid or product on it. Just call us at (360) 721-3166.

Don’t Forget the Furniture Guests Sit On

Carpet gets most of the attention, but your guests will spend a lot of time on your couch and chairs. Arms, headrests, and seat cushions collect body oils, food spills, and pet hair over the year. Upholstery cleaning can freshen up the furniture so the whole room feels clean, not just the floor.

If you have area rugs or Oriental rugs in the entry or under the dining table, they’re worth adding to the list too. Those spots take a beating during holiday gatherings.
